Blidworth Woods - Part 2 (November 2020)

The weather was more favourable for this second visit to Blidworth Woods with bright sunshine until midday. This provided an opportunity to compare the photography with the previous day when it was overcast and the light was flat - see my previous post.

Perhaps the most striking difference between the two days was the vibrancy of the sunlit autumn colours, especially when set against the clear blue sky. The conditions were certainly more uplifting than the previous day.

I did find, however, that the direct sunlight (or incident light) tended to dictate the subjects and a large part of the compositions. In this way, a number of potential scenes were ruled out due to how the light was falling. Other scenes which demanded an exposure into the light were more difficult to capture because of the high level of contrast.

The challenge of photography is therefore working with the conditions as they present themselves. Rarely are two days exactly the same which maintains the interest and motivation for the activity. As it turned out neither of the days, or the different conditions, provided exactly the type of autumn shots I was looking for. That came a week later on a visit to Sherwood Forest.

In the meantime these were a selection from the sunny morning visit to Blidworth Woods. I particularly enjoyed the colours from the larch trees, one of the few, if not the only coniferous variety in the woods that changes colour in autumn:
