Autumn Oaks (November 2020)

Mid to late November is the best time to capture the autumn oaks in Sherwood Forest. The oak leaves at this point are turning from green to a russet orange/brown which then glow in the sunlight. It is probably the last spectacle of the season before winter takes hold.

The best location in the forest to view these colours tends to be in the managed Birklands area. Here the native oaks and birch trees are preserved by removing non native species like pine, beech and sycamore. Consequently, there is more space for the trees to grow providing good access to view and photograph the oak trees' wonderful architecture.
