Golden Hour on Curbar Edge

January saw two very different visits to Cubar Edge, one fine sunset and another in a thick mist. The misty shots will be posted shortly but these are a small selection of golden hour scenes including some intimate compositions which contrast the warm colours of the sunlight with the coldness of the gritstone in the shadows:

River Trent

In contrast to the wintery conditions for most of January was a fine bright day along the River Trent. Particularly pleasant was a soft glow on a number of the trees between Fiskerton and Farndon:

Upper Hexgreave

January’s mist and frost continued on the Southwell Trail with this selection of photographs looking in the direction of Upper Hexgreave. The trees on the lane leading to the Hexgreave Estate were nicely coated with a hoar frost and the pylons on the hill made a good focal point to some of the compositions - very familiar scenes, being close to home, but conditions that were definitely worth recording:

Second Selection From Blidworth Woods

There are enough images from January’s hoar frost in Blidworth Woods for a second selection. The conditions were excellent for the photography and as stated in my previous post most of the compositions were made from one path in the woods. It was a simple case of taking a few steps, stopping, and selecting the details in front of me, which sounds easy, and it is, but the key is to avoid the temptation to move on too quickly believing that a better photo might be around the next bend or in a different location.

One of the features that particularly caught my eye for this selection was the dried leaves on the young oak trees adding colour to the frosted scenes:

Hoar Frost in Blidworth Woods

The cold weather continued in January with the highlight being a morning of low freezing cloud, leaving a hoar frost clinging to the trees in Blidworth Woods.

Initially, I thought I had made a location mistake as the pine plantations were mist and frost free but one forest track, lined with mainly young birch trees, was more exposed to the elements and provided more than enough material for the following series of photographs. The first image sets the scene with a wider angle view of the path followed by a selection of tighter compositions:
