Southwell Minster (October 2019)

If I have ever have a spare moment when I am in Southwell, I like to visit Southwell Minster. It is a magnificent building and on this occasion I was attracted by some emerging autumnal colours and the warming glow of the sunlight on the sandstone walls. In addition, I had a pleasant walk around the quite gardens behind the minister which includes the ruins of a medieval palace:

Foxcovert Nature Reserve (October 2019)

One of the great joys of the autumn season photography is sunlight in the tops of the trees. It produces a wonderful golden glow particularly when set against clear blue skies. The method is very simple, it only requires looking upwards with the camera and using the trunks and branches of the trees as compositional aids to capture the colours.

Of course, the danger, apart from tripping up whilst walking and looking upwards, is taking too many of a similar style of image but I often feel that this type of photography is less about the outcomes and more about the overall photographic experience. I guess without the photography the opportunity to take time and look high into the tree tops are few!

The following set of photographs includes some early season examples of tree top photography taken in the local Foxcovert Nature Reserve. In the coming weeks there will be more of this style of image as the autumn colours start to reach their peak:

Derby Flyover (October 2019)

Two themes developed on a walk from Derby city centre to the railway station. The first was the autumn colours on the path alongside the River Derwent and the second was a flyover near to the station.

The flyover set was prompted by the lines and angles created mainly by the bright sunny conditions casting deep shadows and, whilst it comes second to the autumn colours in terms of aesthetic appeal, I found the subject interesting to capture and I like the results:

These were some of the scenes captured along the riverside:

Blidworth Woods (October 2019)

As a rule I tend to avoid the pine plantations in the local woods and forests when out taking photographs. The long straight trunks and tall evergreen canopy does not always inspire. On this occasion however the late sunlight dictated the subject matter and with some surprise I enjoyed the photography and the results:
