Unfinished Villas (September 2018)

There are a number of unfinished villas and roads at the edge of Playa Blanca, Lanzarote. I am guessing that these are remnants of the financial crisis in 2008 which hit the market for holiday homes hard and halted any further development.

Before I show some of the photographs from one partially completed development I want to clarify that these are not typical of the resort - I don't want to put anyone off Playa Blanca which is a great place for a holiday with fantastic looking hotels and leisure facilities. The coastline is wonderful with great views across to Fuerteventura and there are spectacular volcanic mountains inland. We really enjoyed ourselves.

Whether at home or abroad however I tend to search out subjects for my photography that I find visually interesting and these are not necessarily the picture postcard views. I like to compose with shapes, lines, colours and tones and these are sometimes found in unusual or unexpected places - like abandoned building sites!

The Villa, Lanzarote (September 2018)

For the first selection from this year's holiday to Lanzarote I have chosen a selection of abstracts taken at the villa. They are a good demonstration of the type of thing I look at when relaxing next to the pool! I really enjoy watching subtle changes in tones during the day as the white painted walls reflect the changes in light and colour temperature:

Interestingly, when I returned from holiday I saw a great selection of photographs from the Architectural Photography Awards 2018 which includes an abstract image of a villa in Lanzarote - it has many of the same elements that I was trying to capture... but done an awful lot better!

Robin Hood Hill (September 2018)

It has been a while since I last posted. The photography has continued though and I have been gradually working my way through a series of photographs taken on holiday in the Canary Islands. In my usual way I went searching for the more obscure subject matter for my holiday snaps including an abandoned hotel complex near Playa Blanca in Lanzarote.

There is still some processing to complete so in the meantime, these are a late summer selection taken on Robin Hood Hill, near Oxton in Nottinghamshire. The evening light had a golden touch on the landscape which made for a very pleasant walk and photography session:

Prior to the golden hour light, I had taken some shots of the fields below Robin Hood Hill which looked distinctly autumnal in the low hazy sunlight:
