Summer Trail

The photography over the summer has been a bit sporadic, more reactive than planned. It has only been in the last couple of weeks that I have tried to get the photography habit restarted by trying to take a photograph everyday - I have found in the past that this is good way to re-train the photographic eye.

That said, when I collated the Southwell Trail photography from July and August I was surprised by what I had actually taken during this time. There are actually enough images to profile the summer months along the trail and collectively they are a reminder that the trail photography remains one of the simple pleasures in life.

The trail itself is a former railway line converted into a local nature reserve in the 1970s. Previously, the line served mining activities in the area and was finally closed following the Beeching railway review in the 1960s. The following set of images shows the trail between Farnsfield and Edingley:

At several points along the trail there are views across fields which are part of the Hexgreave Estate:

There are also many footpaths that branch off the Southwell Trail. One in particular crosses the Hexgreave Estate towards Kirklington. On this path are a group of trees that I photograph regularly. The morning light always seems to fall nicely here:

The best afternoon light can be found on a stretch of the trail between the old Farnsfield station and the Old Rufford Road. The landscape is more open on this part of the trail with agricultural fields on both sides of the path:
