Strawberry Hill (January 2019)

Strawberry Hill is part of Strawberry Hill Heath and is a circular area of sessile oak planation that might date from the 1850's (1). It is an area that I have photographer many times over the years but I particularly enjoy foggy or misty conditions in this location.


The main advantage of fog is the extra depth it provides to compositions. It helps to separate the foreground from the mid and background which is often not possible with standard weather conditions. For example, the dried orange oak leaves in the image below are allowed to come forward in the composition due to the softened tones of the trees in the mid-ground and the almost complete diffusion of the trees behind. Without the fog, the branches with leaves would tend to get lost in a jumble of competing tree trunks:
