River Trent (April 2022)

Spring can often rival the autumn spectacle for tree colour. Perhaps it is more subtle in its display but the range of fresh lemon yellows and warmer ochre tones make an attractive combination for the photography.

Timing is crucial though as the spring colours change quickly. It only takes a week or so for the leaves to show, develop, and then turn green in preparation for summer.

This year I was lucky enough to get my timing right on a return to the River Trent, near to Fiskerton. The bare trees captured at the end of March had just started to their spring transition with the photography aided by some fine evening sunlight and still water reflections:

Canal Reflections (April 2022)

Canal reflections are one of the most engaging photographic subjects in the city centre. The flow of the water and the occasional wind movements warp the canal-side buildings creating a multitude of abstract opportunities where no two shots are ever the same.

Added to this mix are the various colours from window frames, signs, canal boats etc. Some of these colours can look dull at the point of capture but this can be corrected or enhanced in photo software. I tend to find that most auto-corrections are enough to cut through the canal’s murkiness although a further boost of clarity always helps the final results:

Blidworth Woods (April 2022)

I have managed to get behind with my posts, yet again, and as time marches on in the year there is a temptation to think that the content lacks relevance. After all it is now summer and I am still looking at spring’s photography.

There is, however, a benefit in reviewing photographs one or two months after taking them. I can appreciate more of the subtleties of the season once it has passed. There is also the surprise of half-forgotten images.

A good example is this set from Blidworth Woods from April. At the time there wasn't much excitement from the photography, I was simply documenting what I saw on the walk. Now, with the summer foliage dominating, the mix of winter bareness and fresh green growth has an attractive simplicity which was not fully recognised at the time:
