Curbar Edge - Dawn to Dusk (January 2014)

The third visit to Curbar Edge in January 2014 started at dawn with some dramatic lighting. An approaching rainstorm was coloured orange and pink by the rising sun before the heavy downpour had me searching for cover. I stopped only the capture a rainbow in the valley below before heading for the car.

Not wishing to give up on the photography for the day, I relocated to Padley Gorge - a great location for sitting out dull weather in the Dark Peak area.

The main subject in Padley is Burbage Brook which cascades its way through the gorge providing opportunities to capture the flowing water. This type of image often benefits from flat lighting which allows a slower shutter speed to be used to gain a sense of movement in the water. These were a few of the results that I had largely forgotten about as they went unprocessed in 2014. I particularly like the first image below:

As the daylight hours are short in January it was possible to return to Curbar Edge for the sunset golden hour. The weather had improved significantly during the afternoon but, as often happens, the sun got caught behind stubborn cloud which prevented the sunlight reaching the foreground. All the action, so to speak, was in the valley below:
