Foxcovert Nature Reserve and plantation was purchased in 1996 by Nottinghamshire's wildlife trust it is thought to have been once part of the ancient Sherwood Forest (
1). Today it sits in between the main A614 and site of the old Calverton colliery (
2) and is accessed by the closed off Gravelly Hollow road.
Being in a hollow the winter sunlight only touches the top of the trees whilst frosty conditions persists at ground level:
