Winter on the Southwell Trail - Part 5

Rain is the theme for this set of images from the Southwell Trail.

In between frequent heavy showers I took some pictures of the standing water on the track but this scene across the fields with a brief bit of light under heavy skies was my favourite:

I had previously captured this scene many times during the autumn series but I think this one is best to date which all goes to show that it isn't easy to second guess the right conditions for photography!

These are some of the other rainy themed shots taken on the day:

Sherwood Forest - January 2018

At this time of the year much of the bracken in the forest has died away and it is possible to get closer to the old oak trees. Some of the lines, colours and textures in the bark and exposed wood are terrific and great to photograph.

These are some of the close-up studies:

Then stepping a little further back for some portraits of the trees:

On the way back to the car I took advantage of the low afternoon sun for some final shots of the day:

Winter on the Southwell Trail - Part 4

There was a severe frost in early January with needle-like ice crystals forming a ground level and whilst this was a good opportunity for close-up photography, it was challenging to capture this type of fine detail with a compact camera.

Making sure the results were sharp was the main issue. Not only was there a shallow depth of field but it was hard to handhold the camera and select a precise point of focus. In the end it was a bit click and hope but I was happy with the results:

Some wider angle shots show the frost lined trail and provide some context for the images shown above. Although further along the trail it was totally frost free:
